Busy Offseason Leads the Way for Nets Playoff Dream

This past offseason, the Brooklyn Nets organization decided to make changes to their team and coaching staff. A change in coaching was needed after the Nets were eliminated in the first round of the 2013 playoffs by the Chicago Bulls. The Nets hired Jason Kidd as their coach, a bold move that many critics said was a bad idea. The Nets also executed a blockbuster trade with divisional rivals, the Boston Celtics, in order to build what they believe to be a championship team.

The Nets began their offseason by drafting rookie Mason Plumlee with the 22nd first round pick in the 2013 draft. Shortly after, they scored a blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics by acquiring Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry. The addition of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce was a beneficial move for the present. However, both Piece and Garnett are veteran players whose years are limited in the NBA. The Nets also signed free agents Andre Kirilenko, Alan Anderson, and Shaun Livingston. These players could provide the Nets with a great deal of points and minutes off of the bench.

The next big change the Brooklyn Nets organization made was hiring Jason Kidd as their new head coach. After 19 years in the NBA, Kidd felt it was time to throw in the towel and retire as a player. He soon decided to take on the new challenge of coaching and on July 12 of 2013, was named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Kidd used to play for the Nets, so it was not surprising that he signed with the Nets when he decided to coach.

The Nets certainly have the potential to be title contenders; with five all-stars in their starting lineup, and skilled backup players to help off the bench. The Nets organization is expecting to win an NBA championship in the next couple of years, since their window of opportunity is slowly closing. The acquisition of young height and veteran players can provide the Nets with enough talent to propel them deep into the playoffs. However the question still remains: Can rookie coach Jason Kidd manage this team well enough to get them through the playoffs and win that long awaited NBA title?
