Chicago Police Superintendent Fired by Mayor After Graphic Shooting Video Goes Viral

On October 20, 2014, Laquan McDonald, a black 17-year-old from Chicago, was brutally shot 16 times by police officer Jason Van Dyke; the entire thing filmed with a grainy police dashboard camera. The video is gruesome: McDonald appears to pose little to no threat as he stumbles down the street, wielding a small pocket knife. The video shows that he kept his distance from the cops; around 10 feet from the police cars parked around him, but was nonetheless approached by a police officer who fired 16 bullets into him, 14 of which were fired after he fell to the ground. The charges against Van Dyke were filed 13 months after this event, with the video being released hours after Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez pressed first-degree murder charges against Van Dyke. An autopsy done on McDonald’s body found the drug PCP in his system (explaining his awkward movement), and although the police officers witnessing the scene claim that his movements made him a threat to them, McDonald appeared to move away from the officer’s right before he was shot. This case is now going to trial, and it will be up to the jury to decide as to whether there is enough evidence to convict Van Dyke of first-degree murder. The release of the video sparked intense anger and mistrust towards the Chicago Police Department. This anger spilled into other channels, some peaceful and some not. On November 30, an anonymous poster on social media stated that they would kill 16 white males on the University of Chicago campus, one for every bullet fired into McDonald. All classes were canceled that Monday morning, and a student by the name of Jabari Dean was charged with posting the threat. He is now awaiting trial. In addition to this controversy, the Chicago police superintendent was fired by the mayor due to pressure from the public after the graphic video of the death of Laquan McDonald went viral. The theme of black teenagers being unnecessarily shot is a disgusting one, and this case is an example for all police officers that the public will not hesitate to throw you to the wolves if you are caught doing such a heinous crime.
