Athlete of the Month: Vinny DiLeo

OHS’ Varsity Baseball team has been experiencing success that it has not realized in many years. For the first time in the team’s illustrious history, it won both the annual Briarcliff Tournament, and the Christian Federico tournament. One of the main reasons for the team’s success is the presence and leadership of star center-fielder Vinny DiLeo. We were able to sit down with DiLeo to gain more insight on the team’s success.

TC: How is the season going?
VD: It’s going great. We recently won two tournaments (Briarcliff and Christian Federico) that we have never won in the same year. However, we ultimately want to win the league and section.

TC: Tell me more about the tournaments.
VD: Well in the Briarcliff Tournament, we won the first couple games handily, beating one team by a score of 10-0. But as we progressed, the games became more challenging and thanks to Tyler Hernandez, we were able to beat our last opponent 1-0. The Christian Federico tournament we won was a great all-around team effort. I was very proud.

TC: How has the team improved from last year?
VD: Our captains Aron Fried, Kevin Haag, and Sean Trenholm have been the steady pillars of the team. The new coaching staff also has to be accredited as they have helped us improve significantly.

TC: Any specific teammates you’ve seen that have made the biggest leaps from last year?
VD: Tyler Hernandez and Sean Trenholm have really improved. As a result, they’ve furthered my own growth as a player and the rest of the team as a whole. And again, Sean, Kevin and Aron have really shaped this team into something really great.

TC: Have you set any personal goals for yourself?
VD: Bunting is always something I’ve felt is really undervalued. So I’ve been working on that a lot. Oh, and I’m really trying not to get picked off so much from first base.

The Current thanks DiLeo for his insight! The team is certainly on the right track, and with DiLeo commanding the Pride’s outfield, the future looks great!
