The Ossining Girls’ basketball team is on a roll once again, as they have won 9 of their 11 games to start the year. Despite the loss of All-American Saniya Chong, the girls team seems to be holding their own in the 2013-2014 season. The team’s success had been a result of the combination of great coaching by Dan Ricci and Patrick Wheelers and stellar plays by Jalay Knowles, Shadeen Samuels, Jenna Lividini, and others. The Current recently interviewed Coach Ricci to obtain more information about the season and the team.

The Current: How is the girls’ basketball team’s season going so far, especially compared to last year when the team was state champions?

Coach Ricci: Our season is going pretty well right now. We are 9-2 with our only two losses to two nationally ranked teams. Our team is very young with no seniors and we are getting better every day.

TC: How do you think the rest of the season will go?

CR: I feel if we keep getting better we have a very good chance of getting back to the County Center and with any luck winning our 5th Sectional Title.

TC: Why is the game on Friday 1/10 so special?

CR: Friday’s game is our annual fundraiser for my Mom’s scholarship fund. All the proceeds from our raffle and donation collection will go directly to the Pauline Ricci Scholarship fund. This is a scholarship I started two years ago when my mom passed away. Last year we gave out 5 $1,000 scholarships to OHS graduating senior athletes. This game is a way for us to keep that scholarship going.
