Jimmy Fallon took over the Late Night host role from Jay Leno two weeks ago. In his first week as host he has had guests ranging from First Lady Michelle Obama to Justin Timberlake. And acts ranging from the Evolution of Hip Hop Dancing with Will Smith and the History of Rap with Justin Timberlake to Ew with Will Ferrell and Michelle Obama.

Keeping up with his demeanor from his Late Night days, Jimmy has been very successful. His first night had about 11.3 million views; the week followed the high ratings with an average of 8.49 million views. That is the highest rating week for the show in 20 years.

Jimmy Fallon is stepping into big shoes and is taking an important time in the night. Jay Leno was the host of the Tonight Show from 1992 until this past January with a brief gap for Conan O’Brien in 2009-10. Leno did not have the vigor that Jimmy had, he was not one for jumping up and down and rapping with Justin Timberlake or lip synching to famous songs. Jimmy does all of those things and more, yet he is in uncharted territory for himself. He has to appeal to an entirely new audience, an older, less energetic crowd, but his ratings indicate that he is doing just fine.

Another change of Fallon’s was moving the Tonight Show from Burbank California back to New York City. The show hasn’t been in New York since 1972 when Johnny Carson moved it out to the West Coast. Jimmy brought the show back to its roots where there’s more of an edge and an “in your face” attitude. Thus proving the East Coast is better.
