As most students have heard, Ossining High School’s National Honors Society held its annual Senior Citizen’s Prom for senior citizens in the school gymnasium on Wednesday, March 9th. This gathering had over 100 senior citizens attend and over 30 students volunteering. Thanks to the live music and students catering the event, this event was a success by creating a magical and memorable night for each and every one of the elders.

The hard work and time dedicated to making this event a delight payed off as senior citizens laughed through the night, dancing to the live tunes that filled the gymnasium. Students enrolled in the National Honors Society, spent their own after school time to be able to plan out and make decorations for this prom. NHS advisors Ms. Love and Ms. Sosa, along with NHS student advisors Olivia Jez-Belden, Tyler Conzone, Sade Tukuru, and Sarah Fendrich, have found the time to spread out information about the Prom and gather students to help make the prom a dazzling event. Students gathered to make decorations that included cutting out musical notes and making posters that read “A little party never killed nobody”.

The theme, Great Gatsby, was greatly expressed through decorations of gold and silver colors, white table cloths, vases with candles, and glitter decorations spread out all throughout the gym walls. Students seeking to volunteer, volunteered from right after school until 9pm when the prom cleanup ended spending an enormous amount of their time helping. Catering included an enormous amount of variations of food such as Baked Ziti, Eggplant, Salad with Dressing, Bread, and included desserts such as cookies and both chocolate and vanilla cake. Refreshments were as well served including a variety of sodas and as well coffee. National Honor Society volunteers catering the event wore a black and white dressy outfit to go along with the theme, contently serving the senior citizens. A photo booth at a corner in the gym was created for senior citizens to be able to take a small but adorable picture with the polaroid camera along with additional props. Raffles and mugs given away were the cherry on top to a delightful night. Each Senior Citizen had a free raffle ticket, being able to win a total of 27 raffle prizes that included gift cards and gift certificates to Dunkin Donuts, Lucy’s Pizza, and Deli Bagel. A gray color mug was given to each elder attending adorned with a bow to add some flavor to the gift, so not every person left empty handed.

This event is one of the many events held by Ossining High School National Honors Society made to cheer up the elderly. Seeing the smiles on the senior citizens faces gave a sense of accomplishment to these volunteers through all the hard work and time given to this event which will surely continue on for the following years.
