Gimme the Mic is one of the most popular and fastest growing classes at OHS. It is an extremely unique class that is devoted to students who love the art of singing and performing. The class is taught by the talented Ms. Kafer who helps students reach their musical goals and aspirations. Students are given the option to choose a song of their choice, and perform it individually or with their friends. The range of song choice and availability of resources to perform this music is extensive. After weeks of laborious practice, students perform their song in front of hundreds of peers and teachers.

Although many students have performed for several years, they still get nervous. Even so, when the performers get on stage and start performing, they get into the song and no longer worryit’s just them and the song in that moment. They own the song and rise to the occasion- which is what makes performing so exciting yet scary. Cameron Smith, new to Gimme the Mic said, “I always get a little shaken when I perform, but when I start singing all the nerves go away. I would recommend this class to anyone!” Comparably, another ardent participant in Gimme the Mic, Ari Kanevsky said, “Gimme the Mic is full of students expressing themselves. It’s really one of the classes that allows students to be themselves, and show others their talents. I love performing on stage and looking at the smiling faces enjoy my performance.”

Like Cameron, many students that are currently in the class recommend it to others. Allison Robbins, a seasoned veteran of Gimme the Mic said, “Not only is Gimme the Mic my favorite class but it relieves stress and builds my confidence. Another student, Justin Ciuzio, has always aspired to perform at a young age and he described the students in his Gimme the Mic class as courageous

The Gimme the Mic class gives students the opportunity to express themselves through music, whether they sing or play an instrument. The sense of community that exists for Gimme the Mic students is comforting as an outlet for so many students. As one of the most interesting and hands-on classes the school has to offer, students should definitely give it consideration no matter how experienced a musician they are!
