Deadpool: A Fresh Take on Superheroes

Deadpool contradicts any popular view of superhero movies currently established. The movie was released on February 12, 2016 in the United States, grossing as much as 619 million dollars in the United States alone. People are so accustomed to watching movies with noble heroes that take part in epic battles that end in a desirable outcome. Deadpool however, shows a different perspective within the superhero world: What if the superhero has no morals? That just leads to a satisfyingly hilarious movie.

Deadpool, however, is centered around the antihero, Deadpool, seeking revenge on the man, Francis Freeman, who experimented on him to give him his fast-healing powers. Deadpool began as Wade Wilson, who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Francis becomes aware of his condition, who then encourages him to take on a series of torturous experiments to reveal Wilson’s hidden mutant genes. Thankfully, Wilson’s mutant gene is fast healing, which cured his cancer. However, his mutant gene also made him ugly, so that he could no longer be accepted into society. The rest of the movie tells the tale of Deadpool tracking Francis, along with the help of two mutants from X-Men’s Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

With so many Marvel movies released and in production, Deadpool offers a very refreshing take on superheroes. Audiences most prominently remember the comedy in this movie. The main character, himself, whose pessimism, realism, and ability to break the fourth wall, gives him a good sense of humor. His suit, nearly always wrapped around his face, is able to convey facial expressions so that the audience can connect with and understand him. The movie has a lot of scenarios in which Deadpool refuses to act like a good-hearted superhero which makes for comedic irony. The script has a comfortable balance between comedy and drama, so that the jokes still remain frequent but fresh and so that the story appeals on a human level.

For what the movie is, a comedy providing a different take on superheroes, it goes beyond its requirements to make for a very enjoyable experience. The script is hilarious, Ryan Reynolds portrays Deadpool amazingly, the supporting characters all play their role to the benefit of Deadpool and the plot, and the fight sequences are exciting. Although the movie isn’t necessarily thought-provoking or filled with drama, Deadpool is the perfect movie to watch for the character dynamics and the comedy. It has all the aspects of a good-time movie.
