Ariana Grande hit new heights with her new single, “thank u, next”. The confident anthem broke Spotify records when the song exceeded Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” record for female artist’s most playbacks in a day. She reached 8.2 million streams in one day, and then broke her own record at 8.5 million the following day.

The surprise release centers around her past relationships and the lessons they taught her. She tells the world that she has found a new love, and that is with herself. She shows that she doesn’t need a partner to help her grow, but instead the confidence and trust she has in herself to continue on with her successful career.

The “thank u, next” music video has also been released, and in it Grande shows some of her closest friends and fellow social media influencers and musicians. It recreates famous scenes from classics like Mean Girls, 13 Going on 30, Legally Blonde, and Bring It On. It is chock-full of “easter eggs” and references, and includes icons such as Troye Sivan, Colleen Ballinger, Kris Jenner, and even her Victorious co-stars Matt Bennett and Elizabeth Gillies.

This song serves as an ending to Grande’s extremely public and quick engagement to comedian Pete Davidson. The pop singer peacefully and positively brought on a new chapter of self-love and success with this fun and unique, record-breaking jam.
