Bill Cosby Charged With Sexual Assault
January 25, 2016
Bill Cosby, once revered as a father figure of comedy in the United States, has recently been charged with sexual assault. These charges arose after a women by the name of Andrea Constand accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her at his Philadelphia home in 2004. Cosby and Constand met through their work Temple University basketball team. Cosby soon became a “friend” to Constand, and is charged with taking her to his home in early 2004 where he allegedly forced her to drink wine that he had drugged. This treated wine made her unable to move, after which she claims he assaulted her.
In the past year, dozens of women have spoken out and made similar accusations of Cosby sexually assaulting them. Cosby’s lawyers, who have long been denying every one of the fifty or so accusations made in the past year, say that they will fight the charges. They claim that the charges were illegally brought by District Attorney Kevin Steele, because it violates an agreement made by the Commonwealth who agreed never to prosecute Cosby on Constand’s allegations of sexual assault because of a lack of evidence. However, a civil service suit filed by Constand has just recently emerged, which contends that Cosby acknowledged giving several women quaaludes with the intention of having sex with them. This has led to the reopening of the case.
Cosby has apologized to Constand and her mother, and even offered to help them financially in any way that he could. This doesn’t sit well with investigators; people “falsely” accused of sexual assault do not just walk up to their accusers, give them an apology, and offer any help they can give.
Cosby’s description of his relationship with Constand, which he gave publicly in 2006, describes a much different course of events than offered recently to investigators by Constand. In his description, Cosby portrays himself as a mentor to Constand, and immediately felt a romantic longing for her in the early 2000s. Cosby said that he would invite her over to his house often, but their relationship ended after he gave her Benadryl followed with sexual contact. Constand told investigators that she had no interest in a romantic relationship with him, and the pills he gave her, to help relieve her stress, gave her blurred vision, dizziness, and nausea. She would later wake up to find most of her clothes had been taken off. Cosby is currently out on bail of one million dollars and awaits trial.
