J.K. Rowling’s Newest Book Made Into New HBO Series
February 26, 2015
Since her work on the Harry Potter Series, it’s been difficult for the public to recognize J.K. Rowling as an adult author. In September of 2012, she refuted that idea when she published The Casual Vacancy, her first novel since Harry Potter. The book was positively received from critics and fans alike, with good reviews and over one million copies sold in the first three weeks. The book follows seven stories that reflect on societal issues such as rape, racism, heroin and marijuana use, abuse, and suicide, all set in the fictional small town of Pagford. She cleverly depicts the social and political conflict among individuals that takes place behind the walls of this seemingly peaceful England town.
Because of its popularity, a British T.V. a three-hour mini-series will spawn from the book during February of 2015, and will last until March of 2015 with the cooperation of British BBC and American HBO. However, the current release date in the United States is on April 29th, 2015, which will give American fans an opportunity to see the show. Both the show and book consist of 19th century aspects in a 21st century setting and was adapted by screenwriter Sarah Phelps with experience in several genres and mini-series alike. J.K. Rowling herself, served as executive producer. She also has experience with screen adaptations with the Harry Potter franchise. This includes the many changes that must be made, a popular one being the altered and unknown grim ending of the book that will surprise first time viewers and readers of the book.
The production crew admitted the difficulties in developing the series due to its multitude of characters. The first episode meant to incorporate all of the different characters so that its numbers won’t confuse the audience. The complex story involves the the interests and conflicts of each character, which the crew admitted would be difficult to leave out. That being said, there will be a rather large cast of renowned british actors for filming including Sir Michael Gambon who played Albus Dumbledore in the later Harry Potter movies.
Considering the positive reviews of the book, its likely that the miniseries will receive similar reactions. Time, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian all praised the creativity, cleverness, and humor of the book that hopefully the adaptation will possess. The extended amount of time spent working on this show (that started back in 2012 after her book published, and was critically acknowledged) supports the notion that this may very well be a memorable and well developed miniseries. If it’s as acclaimed as the book, then that is surely a promising sign for future viewers.
The Casual Vacancy will premiere in two parts on HBO on April 29th and 30th.
