American Horror Story: Freak Show Overview
October 22, 2014
American Horror Story: Freak Show is the fourth season of the FX horror anthology television series American Horror Story. It premiered on October 8, 2014. The season is set in 1952 Jupiter, Florida, recounting the story of one of the last remaining freak shows in America, and their struggle for survival. Sarah Paulson stars as two conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler, who’s been brought under the wing of Elsa Mars, a circus Freak Show leader played by Jessica Lange.
Taking inspiration from Jessica Lange’s interest in photography and wanting to photograph Carnival performers, and classic films like Tod Browning’s Freaks, a movie about and starring real sideshow performers, creator Ryan Murphy (Glee, The Normal Heart) and Brad Falchuk (Glee, Nip/Tuck) chose the setting of a carnival for this years season.
The show is an anthology show, so each season they scrap the story before and write a whole new story line. Some of the actors from seasons past have been James Cromwell, Zachary Quinto, Dylan McDermott, Kate Mara, Chloë Sevigny, and many more incredible actors. Returning cast members who are new and are from previous installments of the series include: Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Grossman, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Michael Chiklis, John Carroll Lynch, Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe and Grace Gummer.
Previous American Horror Story have included Murder House, Asylum, and Coven. This season is expected to bring up the idea of discrimination, particularly people who are classified as “freaks” by the public (as it is centered around a freak show). Creator Ryan Murphy also stated that they decided to wait to tackle a story line like this. “We had to build an entire city”, Ryan Murphy stated in an interview recently, “It’s also our biggest year so I think it took a while and it took success for us to earn the money to do what we had to do”.
Each year the show grows and grows in scale, so for this year, check it out while its airing. This season’s been speculated to be the best one yet, so get on Netflix or tune in to FX now!
