Billie Eilish is perhaps one of the most well-known singer-songwriters in America if not, the world. Known for her unique voice, style, and countless hits such as “Ocean Eyes” or “Bad Guy,” Eilish sprouted to fame rather quickly. Inspired by her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, who had his band, she began writing original songs at the young age of 11. One night, at the age of 14, she decided to upload one, called “Ocean Eyes,” to SoundCloud. The song was viral by the time she woke up the next day. Many view the release of “Ocean Eyes” as the jumpstart to her career as a singer-songwriter and her catapult to stardom. The year following the release of “Ocean Eyes,” Eilish’s song “Bored” was featured in the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, and her EP Don’t Smile at Me was dropped. Three years later, Eilish was one of the most sought after performers at music festivals throughout the world, and four years later she was the star of the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

The Grammys ultimately leaves people with mixed feelings every year. There will always be individuals who believed that certain influencers deserved a certain award more than others; however, those who were nominated, and those who won should be celebrated at the end of the day. A very controversial topic regarding the most recent Grammys was Billie Eilish. By the end of the ceremony, Eilish swept five awards out of the six she was nominated for. Four of the awards were in the big categories of Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist; thus, a drastic change from last year’s Grammys where Eilish was not nominated for nearly as many awards. To the surprise of many, Eilish won Record of the Year over other top contenders such as Ariana Grande, Khalid, Lizzo, and Lil Nas X. While there is no doubt that 18-year-old Billie Eilish has brought her amazing, unique talent to the music world, many question whether her domination of the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards accurately reflects pop culture or was even deserved in the first place.
