For the month of February, the Current is featuring growing female artist Jhaneth Vivar. Jhaneth, a senior at Ossining High School, takes SUNY Drawing 1, one of the many art classes available at OHS, and takes an independent study course with art teacher Mrs. Shams where she spends time building up her art portfolio. Following is an interview between The Current and Artist of the Month Jhaneth Vivar.

TC: To start off, what art classes have you taken? And what classes are you currently taking?

JV: I took Studio In Art my freshmen year of high school. I didn’t take any real art classes until this year because I was focused more on taking math and science classes to be prepared for college and become an engineer. It wasn’t until this year that I discovered I wanted to go into architecture instead after high school and that is why this year I am taking my first actual art class SUNY Drawing 1 and AP Studio Art as an Independent Study with Ms Shams. After high school I am planning on going to NYU for architecture.

TC: What media of art do you work best with?

JV: I’m pretty good with working with all types of art media but I have a preference of drawing with charcoal because it is easier to build up contrast in my art pieces and has a more intense outcome.

TC: What is the concentration of your portfolio which you will submit for AP Studio Art?

JV: My concentration is the study of structures, how they influence our everyday lives, and how they are found in the simplest things. I’m making different kinds of structures such as building structure, hand structure, face structure, etc.

I chose this concentration subject because of my interest in structure which ties into my interest in becoming an architect. I find the engineering behind different structures stands out to me so I tied the examination of different structures in our everyday lives with structures of the human body.

TC: What type of art do you like to create?

JV: I like to focus on realism within my art such as creating realistic art of animals, people, and still life’s.

TC: What art accomplishments do you have?
JV: My art is currently being displayed at the Katonah Museum of Art and every single year my art is displayed at the Ossining Public Library Art Show. Additionally I am participating in the Veterans Project with Mr. Whitehead and Mr. Quiroga, and was nominated 2017’s Class Artist for superlatives.
