January Athlete of the Month: Joe Nolan

Hunter Caparelli, Sports Editor

Our Athlete of the Month for the month of January is Joe Nolan.  Joe is currently a senior wrestler for the Ossining Wrestling Team.  Joe is one of the team captains and he is the starting 285lb. wrestler.  He is currently 19-1 on the season with 15 wins coming by pinfall. Joe won The Irvington Invitational where he was selected as the upper weight (152lb.-185lb.) Most Outstanding Wrestler.  He also won The Somers Tournament and The Prestigious Mid Hudson Tournament.  At the Mid Hudson Tournament, Joe was 8-0 over the span of two days with 7 pins.  Joe is currently ranked 2nd in Section One Division 1. On the weekend of January 11th and January 12th, Joe will be competing at the Eastern States Classic where 12 wrestlers in his bracket are ranked top 15 in New York State and 20 of the wrestlers have All Section or All State accolades from past seasons.

When asked to give a short summary of his wrestling career, Joe replied, “I think I started wrestling in third or fourth grade.  I’ve only ever competed for Ossining and I have not wrestled for any other teams or schools.”

Joe’s response to describing his high school career in one sentence– “A lot of hard work and dedication towards my sport.”

When questioned if he would continue to wrestle after high school, he answered, “If it was a good school and a great opportunity, then definitely yes.”

To conclude the interview, Joe was asked how he plans on finishing his senior wrestling season– “I would love to compete at states, and possibly even place!”

Not only is Joe Nolan an amazing wrestler, but he was also the starting OL/DL for the Ossining Football Team and he is on the Ossining Varsity Lacrosse Team.  Even though the Wrestling Team lost a few of its top wrestlers last season to graduation, which include Jonathan Benitez, Zach Bonner, Joshua Manning, and Izaiah Steen, Joe Nolan has stepped up as a top wrestler on his team and has let it be known to his competitors.  We wish him luck for the rest of his incredible season and we hope for the best!
