Our Athlete of the Month for the month of December is Brianna Culcay.  Brianna played for the Ossining Varsity Volleyball Team during the Fall and as a key contributor, the team won the League Championship, Sectional Championship, and Regional Championship!  With a final regular season of 24-0, Brianna helped lead the volleyball team to the State Final Four. Brianna finished the 2019 season with 904 assists, 111 digs, 46 aces, and 7 kills. In addition, she had a 95% serving percentage and she only had 19 errors on 377 total serves!

When asked to give a short summary of her volleyball career, Brianna replied, “I first started playing with my cousin when I was in 4th grade, just the two of us.  I then started playing on a volleyball team in 5th grade for my school (I used to go to St. Augustine). Once I started high school volleyball, I became the setter. I also play for Downstate during the offseason.”

Brianna’s response to describing her high school career in couple quick sentences– “It has been an incredible, growing experience.  Volleyball has really helped me grow as a person, a player, a teammate, and a friend.”

When questioned if she would continue playing volleyball after high school, she answered, “I’d consider playing if I was presented with the opportunity.  But, honestly, the thing I enjoyed the most about high school volleyball was having my family there at every game and I know that wouldn’t be possible if I play in college.”

To conclude the interview, Brianna was asked how she would reflect on the past season with everything the team accomplished– “This past season has honestly been a dream.  It’s been all I’ve wanted and more. I’m so proud of all the hard work everyone put in to have, honestly, the best season in Ossining volleyball history. I’m sad that it’s all over, but I’m happy I ended my senior season making history with my best friends.”

Despite the fact that the volleyball team came just short of a State Championship, there was much to be proud of from what the team achieved this season.  Even though this was Brianna’s final season with the volleyball team, they definitely have a lot of up-and-coming talent to look forward to that will help continue the success of Ossining Volleyball.
