Korea has been in war since 1950. Russia’s Soviet Union and the United States were head to head in search for nations to join their political and economic standpoint during the Cold War. This led to North Korea turning into a communist nation under the rule of Kim Il-sung and South Korea turning into capitalistic nation under the rule of Syngman Rhee. In 1953, North and South Korea negotiated the Korean Armistice Agreement, which halted all fighting, but wasn’t an official peace agreement. On April 27th of 2018, leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un and President of South Korea Moon Jae-in met for the first time in over a decade.

The summit had been strategically planned out months in advance. In the morning, Kim and Moon spoke of the denuclearization of both countries. This meeting took place for nearly two hours. Then, the two leaders planted a tree and walked through the demilitarized zone. In the evening, they joined together for dinner with the accompaniment of their wives.

The meeting between the two nations has revealed peace among the citizens. Although some people are skeptical of Kim’s intentions on denuclearization, as he had continuously threatened the United States and murdered his half brother Kim Jong Nam in Malaysia. Although, this year he has proven countlessly to be ready for the unification of the Korean Peninsula.

Currently, South Korea is trying to revive the summit meetings between the United States and South Korea. Last week, Trump backed out from a meeting with Kim Jong Un on June 12th in Singapore.
