A Coach’s Story

A Coachs Story

Fanny Zhang, Staff Writer

The Ossining School District provides their students with many different programs. Activities such as sports have become a big factor in the lives of most students in Ossining. Thanks to our staff and coaches, this program continues to thrive, receiving an increased amount of attention over the years.

As a sub that had recently finished her student teaching, and is on a leave replacement job, Kelly Doering also contributes to the Ossining school sports program. She coaches junior-varsity girls soccer and lacrosse teams. Playing sports at an early age, and it has always been a large factor in her life. Growing up, she always traveled to different states for tournaments  with her friends and families. After she finished playing herself, she automatically knew coaching would be her “next adventure”.

Coach Doering attended MacArthur High School in Long Island, where she played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. She was even named Scholar Athlete of the year in her senior year of high school, which was one of her “most notable success”. She continued her lacrosse career in college at SUNY Geneseo, where she was “was extremely proud to be a Knight ”. She began coaching when she was just in high school. She volunteered to coach the local soccer and lacrosse teams, and was also a basketball camp instructor.  Overall her decision to coach, was inspired by her numerous sporting experiences.

In her first year of coaching lacrosse, her team had thirteen wins and only two losses.  As a coach, she has had many successes. One of them includes where,

“I coached a lacrosse team with 14 players on the roster ( 12 are needed on the field) so one game, we only had 10 players! However, our team gave 110% and played their hearts out and was able to win the game! Even the coach of the other team was impressed by our endurance and will to win, even with less players.”

Coach Doering’s main priority in coaching is not only to be successful, but to share the importance of  “building friendships and learning sportsmanship”. In addition to that, she says,

“ I hope every player realizes how important they are to the team. Each girl is on the team for a reason, and each player contributes to the overall team’s success. I also hope to teach that success is not always winning, but also improving and gaining confidence.”

Through her coaching experiences, she has learned that “coaching is more than just teaching skills but also learning life lessons from each other.” She hopes to continue coaching soccer and lacrosse for as long as she can, and for those who are trying out for a sport she says, “Go for it! You never know until you try.

Overall, a special thank you to Kelly Doering for her contributions.
